Description

The NBI Recruitment Tool enables recruiters to assess ten applicants for a particular job role against a job profile. The tool includes ten of the NBI™ General Adult Instruments,  and ten of the NBI™ Personal Skills Instruments. These instruments are online questionnaires to be completed by the job applicants, to determine their thinking preferences and where their skills lie.

The NBI Recruitment Tool also includes five of the NBI™ Job Instruments. This instrument is another online questionnaire. It is completed by the hiring manager and people in the organisation that know the job requirements well, such as successful incumbents and peers. This results in a job profile.

This process helps make effective recruitment decisions by comparing the job profile with each applicant’s NBI™ General Adult Instrument and NBI™ Personal Skills Instrument profiles. Where job, skills and personal thinking preferences align or are similar, it is likely the applicant will be competent and happy in the job.

This page explains each of the recruitment tool components, outlines the benefits and describes what you receive.

NBI™ General Adult Instrument

The NBI™ General Adult Instrument is designed to evaluate and create a profile of an individual’s thinking preferences. From a recruitment perspective, it is helpful to determine if an individual has natural thinking tendencies conducive to the job role.

The left and right sides of our brains control different aspects of our thoughts and actions. The NBI™ General Adult Instrument explores this further and describes thinking preferences based on four thinking quadrants of the brain:

  • L1 – Analytical and factual (accurate, mathematical, critical, realistic, logical, performance-driven, objective)
  • L2 – Organised and detailed (structured, task-driven, planned, punctual, neat, reliable, step-by-step, thorough)
  • R1 – Strategic and unorthodox (big picture, imaginative, visualising, flexible, curious, risk-taking, unstructured, prefers change)
  • R2 – Interpersonal and sensitive (co-operation, sociable, approachable, empathy, teamwork, people-focus, involved, respectful, feeling, body language, touch, sensitive)

Below is an example of an NBI profile showing the four quadrants. It also shows the eight dimensions – two for each quadrant.

  • L1 Realist/Analyst (blue)
  • L2 Preserver/Organiser (green)
  • R1 Strategist/Imagineer (yellow)
  • R2 Socialiser/Empathiser (red)

NBI™ Personal Skills Instrument

The NBI™ Personal Skills Instrument creates a profile that identifies a person’s skills. It highlights skills in areas that may be different to a person’s thinking preferences. Someone may also have a strong thinking preference in one quadrant but have not developed the required skills.

Liking or preferring something does not always mean that person has the skills to do it well. Conversely an individual may be skilled at something but not like doing it. In a work environment, it is difficult to sustain passion and energy, if the correlation between the preference profile and skills profile is low.

Comparing a NBI skills profile with a NBI job profile will identify skill gaps and opportunities for growth. Some skill gaps can be closed with training and professional development.

NBI™ Job Instrument

The NBI™ Job Instrument enables recruiters to identify the skills and attitude required for a particular role. Several people in your organisation who understand the job will complete a series of online questions. The data and specific quadrant scores are then analysed and printed in a report. This is then used to create a brain profile for the job. This can be integrated with a job description to create a more in-depth job profile.

Recruiters can use this instrument to design the job profiles of existing and future jobs. This helps with understanding the types of people needed for those jobs.

Benefits of the NBI Recruitment Tool

The NBI™ system is a well researched and reliable indicator of thinking preferences. Analysing a job applicant’s preferences and skills against a job profile will help ensure a good fit for role and for the organisation. The benefits of the NBI Recruitment Tool include:

  • Helping choose the right candidate by going beyond the typical job interview process
  • Understanding the skills required in the job role by creating a job profile
  • Evaluating candidates’ thinking preferences to see what they like to do
  • Evaluating candidates’ skills to identify what they are good at
  • Determining opportunities for a candidate’s learning and development
  • Helping internal job candidates make more informed job and career choices
  • Understanding how to induct new people into your organisation by ensuring high-quality communication occurs from the beginning

These benefits can lead to a more effective recruitment process.
